Should the U.S Supreme Court consider ending the Death Penalty?

Many Nations of the World have abolished the death penalty. It is time for the United States to stand up and be recognized as one of them. To many times i see the death penalty being handed down under the guise of Punishment, When after all, it is nothing more than a form of revenge. Timothy Mcveigh comes to mind first and foremost. I was astonished at the relative speed in which his sentence was handed down and subsquently carried out. I am not a supporter or endorser of Mr. Mcveigh’s crimes, but i do believe that Killing another person is wrong. Whether it is a homicide, or, a legally carried out execution. Time and again it has been evidenced that capitol crimes (crimes punishable by the death penalty) occur at there highest frequency when this country goes to war. My point is that killing begets killing. When citizens, law abiding or not, see the country endorsing killing, they find themselves anesthetized to the truth. Killing is wrong. The death penalty is counterproductive

  1. Well, of course not, I don’t want my tax rates to increase.

  2. IF A SNAKE BITES YOU, YOU PINCH IT’S HEAD OFF.

  3. Ethically speaking I think that there is something to be said for the old addage “an eye for an eye”. For example, if someone kills an innocent child I really don’t think there is any punishment fitting of the crime other than death- do you?

  4. Yes you should. We got rid of that ‘barbarianism’ (state sponsored murder) a long time ago.

We protect snakes (the animal) as well

  5. YES, YES , YES It is sick and barbaric and it is not dispensed equally. Many more minorities, more poor, less wealthy and fewer women. Thats bull.

And it costs more for a death penalty case than life in prison.

  6. I believe that there are people who have proven themselves unworthy, unable and unwilling to be active members of society. For offenders of heinous crimes against others, the punishment of death is fair. I think your point that killing begets killing can be valid. I have also heard others argue against capital punishment with “two wrongs don’t make a right.” I get where you are coming from…but in extreme cases, evil should not persist. Evil should not get HBO, free food, not pay taxes. Evil should pay the price for their wrongdoings and be prevented from further wrongdoings.

  7. The only way in which the Supreme court should consider the death penalty is whether it is cruel and unusual punishment. The supreme courts job is the rule on whether something is constitutional, if one wants to have the death penalty made illegal they should write to their representatives in congress.

  8. Yes, the death penalty should be abolished. Although I do believe that a person who kills another should be punished with death, our legal system is NOT 100% accurate. Putting to death an innocent person is just as wrong and disgusting as the crime for which this person was wrongly convicted.

  9. hmmm i somewhat agree on this subject to some extint. i have recently recieved an email about this arizona county sheriff named sheriff Joe Arpio. he doesnt allow his inmates to have cable. puts them out in tents in the desert no wieght lifting. the only show they can watch is the weather channel basically they arent being pampered like so many inmates in jail. they are being punished for the crimes they commit. if we put criminals in jail and they get out and get put back in what is the purpose for letting them out in the first place. take all of the sex offenders that keep getting out and commiting the same crime or one worse than the one they were convicted for. why dont we just send them over to Iraq? bring home the soldiers and send the criminals over there to fight the war. we pay the taxes and the justice system is letting them go why not put it to use. we pay for the war and for the criminals why not put the two together and save a bit of money.

  10. No some people are just evil and need to die before they kill more people.

I for one think criminals should die the way their victims died. No matter how gruesome.

Why should we pay to feed and house such a person for the rest of their lives? The majority on death rows will never be put to death anyway while public defenders (also paid for by us) take them through their legally entitled appeals process. It is not revenge. Timothy Mcveigh cost many many many families untold grief and cost the state of Oklahoma and the Federal government, and thereby indirectly all of us, an unquantifiable amount of money. Why on earth would I want to have my tax dollars support him, or others who commit unspeakable crimes, while they live out the rest of their natural lives behind bars? Horse pucky.

Those are all good points for the legislatures to consider but the constitution does not allow the court to simply decide that the death penalty is unwise. State legislatures decide and then then Court decides if that penalty is barred as “cruel and unusual” punishment but the constitution doesn’t preclude state laws that are merely “counterproductive.” so, run for your state legislature and vote to abolish the death penalty in your state.
