Recently, Jared Lougher, was arrested for murder and attempted assassination of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. Why was it necessary to assign him a special public defender, Judy Clarke? My understanding is she has defended homegrown domestic terrorist like the Unabomber and Timothy McVeigh. Why the special treatment?

She is possibly the only one willing to defend him. Everyone has a right to trial, you know. Clarke will work with the authorities to come out with the best possible outcome for her client, just like any other defender would. We may not like it, but it is the constitution, and that is what makes America great.

Yes it is special treatment; look at the great job that she did with McVeigh. If he were allowed to get the OJ Simpson Defense Team he could get acquitted.
My question exactly when I read the article about this. I think that he should be treated like every other criminal that can’t afford an ‘adequate’ attorney…just assign him somebody.
She may have requested to defend him judging from her previous list of “clients” Many will not want to defend him. I agree the state does not want to take any chances of a conviction being overturned and the best way is to make sure he has competent counsel.
I’m not sure, but I do wonder who Judy Clarke ticked off in the past and why she keeps getting selected as the Federal Public Defender for these awful cases. She’s a tough woman and able to handle difficult situations.

I agree with others. This is a high profile case and if the defense lawyer is very good, then there is little chance of mistrial and no one can complain he didn’t get the proper defense.
She won’t get an acquittal for him, but she will fight that he won’t get the death penalty.
I heard it was because most local Pima County public defenders excused themselves from defending Loughner because one of the dead was a local Federal Judge. It’s going to be a Federal Trial and State Death Penalty trial, and would take an extra ordinary kind of defense.
