Oklahoma bombing and now this bridge collapse – when are Americans going to learn to build things properly?

The reason why the Oklahoma Federal building bombed by Timothy McVeigh was so devasting was because of the nominal building code used to construct it – is this going to be the same story with this bridge in Minnesota – when are they going to learn that ‘nominal’ just doesn’t cut it with the laws of physics! Around 600,000 bridges and they’re going to have probably relook at a lot of them because of this – even now they’re moaning about a fast moving river hampering rescue and salvage operations – have they never heard of a chinook helicopter – why can’t they remove debris from the air? Why can’t the build some sort of channel to divert the Mississippi away from the damaged sections? Oh of course that’s right isn’t it – it will COST MONEY to do that. They were renovating this bridge and allowed a fully laden train to trundle across it – and the cars whilst messing about with its construction – close the bridge – might that not have been safer? I know you can always be wise with-
the benefit of hindsight, but honestly surely it doesn’t take a genius to work out they were pushing their luck?

Watch out for ”those them their ‘gators folks – they don’t do nominal or minimal – they only DO NATURAL AND AWESOME AND TO THE EXTREME – do you get my drift over there on the Kindergarten Continent?
How can you hire Americans to do this work and complain about foreign governments, when you are not the indigenous people – YOU ARE THE FOREIGNERS IN SOMEONE ELSES COUNTRY – talk about arrogance – ‘relying on foreign government’ that’s rich that is – I swear!

  1. When we start hiring more Americans to build these things instead of relying on foreign government

  2. You’re dumb

  3. SIN XCITY XBLUES

the mojority of the bridges built in this country were built by engineers who didn’t know as much about building as we do today and americans and so called immigrants built them. fact- more than 50 percent of bridges built then need to be replaced today. bush wants to fund a war today and kick the immigrants out. so you go figure. he could give a f*** about a bridge.

  4. To an extent… you are correct. Things are built cheap, not good…. at least not anymore.

That’s why bridges built 100 years ago are still standing, but bridges built 50 years ago are not.

But still, our building codes are very good. Building are not meant to withstand a bomb, and I dont expect them to. There is only so much that we can afford to spend on a building (or bridge), at some point, the extra cost does not warrant the extra protection against a very unlikely event.

  5. I don’t know. I work in law so I don’t have to really build things. But I think it’s the higher ups who have either put maintenance to the backburner or just didn’t want to spend the millions of millions of dollars to repair it the right way. Just like in New York with the explosion of the city’s underground heating systems. They didn’t want to spend the money to repair it so they repair it on a need basis, unfortunately, it’s after something really bad happens.

But don’t get all silly and say “Americans” as if every other person outside of America is building A1 buildings, bridges and whatnot, because that just wouldn’t be true, now would it.

You should wait until there’s something more reasonable to complain about the next time you want to spew your hatred for America. This really isn’t that convincing.

  6. These Bridges were built nearly 50 yrs ago.Structure design is much better now but everything has a certain life span.

  7. I vote Capt. America

The reason the Oklahoma Federal building bombing was so devastating is because men, women and children died in that bombing, because a man decided to make a very poor “statement.” “Bombing” – that would be why it was “devastating.”

  8. How many buildings and bridges have we built that have NOT fallen down?

  9. hmmmm nice comparison idiot. A horrible accident involving a bridge collapse where sadly a few people died and an intentional terrorist attack on innocent people that kills 160+ people……. and you blame our infastructure….. so whats next the steam pipe in manhatten exploding and 9/11….. I suppose engineers should plan for tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, and Idiots who have an agenda so perverse that they kill innocent men women and children. If I drive my car into a brick wall at 100 miles per hour and I die…… do I fault the car for not protecting me…. no I fault the actions that led up to me driving TOWARDS A WALL AT 100 MILES AN HOUR!

  10. The truth of the matter is that it is all relative, what goes up, sadly, must come down, we just continue to pray that no one is hurt when it does and that the individuals that are put in place to build and maintain the bridges are competent, knowledgeable individuals. God Bless.

  11. you are right do it big do it cheap do it fast but just do it in time
