How do you feel about George Carlins statement on the Oklahoma City bombing?

“When they talk about domestic terrorism, they often cite the Oklahoma City bombing. But that wasn’t terrorism. Terrorism involves a series of acts intended to put a civilian population in a state of panic, fear and uncertainty, in order to achieve some political goal. Oklahoma wasn’t terrorism, it was payback. Revenge. Timothy McVeigh wanted to punish the federal government for what it did at Waco and Ruby Ridge. Revenge, not terrorism.”

  1. George Carlin was funny way back when. He became senile and quite a DB in his later years. I sent an email to Bill Marr a couple years ago and asked him when he is going to get back into comedy. I put Carlin in the same category, in the several years before his death.

  2. Mr Carlin was correct.

  3. I’m sorry, but that doesn’t sound like George Carlin. If you could post the You tube with him saying it that would be great.

ADD on: please, with all due resect I would like a video. I need to SEE him saying it. That is just so awful. I would like to hold out some kind of hope he didn’t really say that.

    2nd ADD ON
Jason, Before you call me out, read my profile. First of all, I don’t believe in capital punishment but not for religious reasons I don’t believe any government should have the right to kill its citizens for any reason.
Second, I was trying to get the asker to post a video because I am sick and tired of people pulling Tim McVeigh out of their ass on this board and various other figures and events to try to solicit a specific response. so they can move on to their next troll. Just in case you are still misunderstanding me, George Carlin is a Jackass. The Oklahoma City Bombing was tragic and I am attempting to get the asker to realize the credibility of his question is shaky at best. It is called a ‘leading question’. Please realize that after over 23,000 points and over 3 years on this board I was using hyperbole.

  4. Terrorism is a subjective statement. What is considered terrorism to most Westerners, is martyrdom & holy retribution to many who support violent Jihad.

Kinda like how most Americans saw Bush’s ‘war on terror’ as democratizing & brining peace to the Middle East, most Middle Easterners saw the same thing as invading their country, pillaging their resources & setting up pro-U.S. puppet governments

  5. McVeigh used terrorism as a means to perpetrate his revenge. I disagree with Carlin. BTW: on most things political Carlin is not meant to be taken seriously, he himself knew this. He is a comedian, a humorist, not that what they say isn’t based on some truth, but it’s not meant to be taken entirely seriously.

  6. Terrorism coming out of the middle east could also be described as revenge for the crusades, supporting Israel, the first Iraq war, camel and towelhead jokes, whatever.

  7. I love George Carlin. I thought he was brilliant. But in this case I think he’s wrong. Terrorism is targetting innocent civilians for purposes of destroying morale. Many of the victims of the OKC bombing were innocent bystanders, including a number of pre-schoolers at a child care center in the building.

McVeigh might have seen it as revenge, but we don’t trust -his- perspectives, do we? 8^P Charlie Manson may have had some internal justification for the murders he arranged too, but we don’t look at it his way.

  8. Revenge is not a good reason for bombing a building with a day care center in it.

  9. American citizen and taxpayer

I disagree. I would define terrorism as deliberately targeting civilians in order to kill as many as possible. The fact that McVeigh, or any such person, has a “reason” for his actions is irrelevant.

  10. Carlin, as always, was correct in his description of McVeigh’s intentions. It is historical fact that McVeigh was inspired to do what he did primarily because of the Waco incident, in particular the use of gas agents on women and children (because of his exposure to them when he was in the military).

Timothy McVeigh was increasingly worried about the size of government and the direction it was headed (socialism). He worried about gun rights and our Constitution being trampled upon.. These, in of themselves, were no different than what many in the Tea Party movement are worried about. Now, don’t misunderstand me people, i’m not condoning what McVeigh did nor am i comparing him to individuals in the TP. He was a sick individual with ALOT of problems, he wasn’t a Patriot (as he would’ve liked to have identified himself as) and he wasn’t a terrorist.. McVeigh was a criminal with his sights set on revenge on the Federal government. Nothing more, nothing less.

EDIT: You see, this is why McVeigh was a sick individual. He was upset at the Federal government for allowing women and children to be hurt in the Waco ordeal.. Yet, his bombing of a government building (which is why he targeted it) killed innocent women and children. A sane and rational thinking person would see the hypocrisy in that line of thought. He was not those things.

Rabid.. Whether Carlin said these things (which he did) is irrelevant. The classification of McVeigh as a “terrorist” has always been a point of contention. It’s not as appaling as you make it sound.

Edit Rabid.. I’m sure Carlin would have the same to say about you..

First of all, i don’t read individual’s profiles.. i have better things to do.

Secondly, the Asker already provided enough info for you to do the research yourself. Since you’re such an Answers Pro (23000 pts is b.s. and you know it), you should know not to trust everything you read on here.. I understand your “Troll” argument (i’ve been a member longer than you have) but i’ve seen much more vague questions than this one that would qualify as a Troll. I think you just disagree with the statement and dislike Carlin (obviously) so you decided to be difficult.. But, whatever..
