Yeah
I got this news earlier today from a very reliable source. She will be trained by Asmussen for the remainder of her career. Upon her retirement, she will be bred to two time Horse Of The Year, Curlin. If this doesn’t produce one heck of a runner, I don’t know what will. It will be a way off, but something we racing fans will be anxious to see play out. If she were to ever face Mine That Bird, she would leave him in the dust.
I’d take Rachel over Mine That Bird. It will be interesting to see if Asmussen chooses a different jockey than Borel to ride her. I’m disappointed that Asmussen will be her trainer. He gives me the creeps.
UPDATE – 5/09 – Found out in Fridays DRF Rumors are true about Asmussen being Rachel Alexandra’s trainer, plus Borel will be her Jockey..I feel better that a least he’s her jockey.
NOTE: Below was writen before 5/09-
Awesome news, only because it makes Preakness more interesting, however, sad for Calvin who rode Rachel Alexandra, and yes she was Sold, but RELEASE HAS NO MENTION ON WHO WILL TRAIN HER, only states Asmussen is likely…So, we’ll have to wait and see if rumors are true…Interest in seeing how Mind That Bird and Rachel Alexandra workouts will be like…This news was as followed:

RSS ShareThisJess Jackson’s Stonestreet Stables and Harold T. McCormick have purchased spectacular Kentucky Oaks (gr. I) winner Rachel Alexandra from Dolphus Morrison and Mike Lauffer.
“Rachel Alexandra is one of the best horses in racing today,” Jess Jackson said in a news release. “She is fast, strong and durable — the traits we should all be breeding into all future generations of race horses. Her beauty and athleticism will thrill thousands of fans. ”
McCormick, the release said, is from Birmingham, Ala.
Rachel Alexandra, by Medaglia d’Oro , won the May 1 Oaks at Churchill Downs in spectacular fashion, drawing away from the field under jockey Calvin Borel to win by 20 ¼ lengths.
The release makes no mention of who will train Rachel Alexandra, but Daily Racing Form reported she likely will be transfered from Hal Wiggins to Steve Asmussen.
Jackson is the majority owner of two-time Horse of the Year Curlin, who was trained by Asmussen. Curlin now stands at Lane’s End Farm near Versailles, Ky., and Jackson said following her retirement, Rachel Alexandra will be bred to Curlin .
In addition to the Oaks win, Rachel Alexandra’s graded stakes victories include the 2008 Golden Rod Stakes (gr. II), 2009 Fair Grounds Oaks (gr. II), and 2009 Fantasy Stakes (gr. II). Bred in Kentucky by Morrison from the Roar mare Lotta Kim, the 3-year-old filly has won five of seven starts and has earnings $958,354,
To add to the news: Pimlico officials confirm that Jess Jackson did contact them to ask about supplementing the filly to the Preakness; she’s not nominated, so it would cost $100,000 to supplement her.
The Louisville Courier-Journal is reporting that as soon as the fund transfer from Jackson to Dolphus Morrison and Mike Lauffer is complete, the filly will be transferred to Asmussen’s stable.
I sure hope Hal Wiggins, her current trainer, is getting some commission on the sale or bonus for developing her. It must bite, big-time, to lose a horse like this: literally a once-in-a-lifetime kind of horse. Man, I hope he’s got something else in the barn as a consolation for losing her.
Jackson is sportsman, but he’s also got an ego. I sure hope he treasures this filly. I wonder how much he paid for the filly, who brokered the deal, and if there are escalation clauses in the sale contract based on Rachel Alexandra winning additional races and/or getting Eclipse award(s).
Can you imagine having a horse with that kind of potential and selling her for mere money? I like the comment Sam Riddle once made about selling Man O’ War, when he was offered $1 million for the horse: he refused, saying “Many people can have a million dollars, but only one man can have Man O’ War.”
I read the news story earlier before the deal was confirmed. I was excited because I respect Jess Jackson a lot… this is the guy who kept Curlin racing as a 4 year old, turning down big stud fees. It didn’t strike me that it could mean that she’d run in the Preakness… that’s awfully soon. But she’ll handle it fine.
This is sad for Calvin Borel though… he’ll probably never ride the filly again. Steve Asmussen will want his own jockey on board and Calvin’s probably already committed to Mine that Bird for the Preakness. I love Calvin and he deserves every second of celebration and basking in the glory of winning on what he calls the best horse he’s ever ridden. It’s sad to think that the Kentucky Oaks was the last time he’d get to ride her… he didn’t get any warning. Maybe if he had known, he would have ridden her to the finish line to see what she could really do!
edit: regarding Rachel Alexandra’s chances in the Preakness. These colts will certainly be the biggest test she has ever faced. However there’s no reason to discredit her 20 length romp. People try to say Ruffian wasn’t very good because she wasn’t beating very good horses. But the fact is, she was setting records in every race. Rachel Alexandra’s Oaks win was against no one, but it was a mile and an eighth in 1:48 without the filly being asked for run. Her final eighth was in 12 seconds under a hand ride. The whole race was like an afternoon workout. Even if there were horses who could keep up with her in the race, she still would have won and it would still be spectacular.
I have mixed feelings about the sale. I’d love to see Rachel Alexandra race the colts, and apparently the only way that was gonna happen was if her owner sold her.
But I’m not a fan of Steve Asmussen. I think it’s a travesty to take the filly away from a clean trainer who did a good job with her and turn her over to a trainer with 20+ doping violations. I hope the Asmussen part of the story is incorrect.
And I’ll be rooting for Calvin Borel in the Preakness regardless of which horse he’s riding.
the bird falls down…. in fact she beats him by 15
As much as I liked Curlin’s owner, I hated to see this sale. I would love to see Rachel against the boys, but I liked the other owner’s answer. I think the best thing for Rachel is to let her wait as planned and run in the Acorn. It would be a shame for Calvin NOT to stay her jockey.
A Rachel/Curlin foal would be so awesome. .
the idea of her running in the Preakness is exhilarating. it would be great for the sport if they didnt hold her back by making her only race fillies. the boys should be worried. she very well could take the final two thirds of the triple crown leaving everyone disgusted that we dont have our 12th Triple Crown winner. and first filly. good god horse racing was robbed by her former owner. i personally do not like Borel so the jock change would be refreshing for me. after the Preakness MTB will be remembered the same way we look at Giacamo. a fluke. i bet he doesnt hit the board.
from reading the reports though it almost seems like they cant wait to breed her to Curlin. now that should be one hell of a horse. i just hope they arent in too much of a rush.
It would break my heart if they put her in the Preakness. Some great mares have broken down while racing with the boys, Eight Belles and Ruffian to name just two.
I’m going against the tide here and saying I don’t want to see RA in the Preakness. She only dusted glorified allowance fillies in the Oaks. That doesn’t make her a lock to beat Grade 1 colts, not even mediocre ones. For her good, I’d prefer they let her prove herself against tough fillies like Zenyatta before they run her against the big boys.
From a betting angle it’s good. The typical Preakness bettors will put their money on RA because all they saw was a 20 length romp, no matter there was nothing behind her. That leaves some good horses paying long shot money.
IF MTB runs back to his Derby form, I don’t think she beats a horse that comes home like he did, but that’s a big IF…
The RA + Curlin mating is silly hype. I still remember all the excitement when they bred Lady’s Secret (Horse of the Year and Secretariat’s daughter) with Triple Crowner Seattle Slew. I bet nobody here ever heard of the spectacular flop that mating produced.
i think its good we will be able to see her full potential, i think she will crush Mine That Bird, the only other races i think he might win are the Belmont or Breeder Cup just because the big feilds other than that i dont see him winning anything again
